Director, Andrew Mogrelia.
Andrew Mogrelia has
conducted many leading orchestras in England, including the Philharmonia,
Royal Philharmonic, BBC Symphony, and BBC Scottish Symphony, among others. In
addition, Mogrelia has appeared in venues such as London’s Royal Festival Hall
and the Barbican, Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, and Symphony Hall in Birmingham.
Overseas, he has conducted orchestras throughout the Netherlands including the
Residentie Orchestra, Dutch Radio Symphony, and the Nieuw Sinfonietta
Amsterdam. He has also worked widely in the Czech and Slovak Republics, with
symphonies including Slovak Radio Symphony, and the Slovak Philharmonic.
Mogrelia has an extensive discography. Recordings for Naxos and Marco Polo
include orchestra works by Handel, Suk, and Novak, as well as numerous
complete ballets by Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, and Adam, all of which received
critical acclaim.His recording of Tchaikovsky’s complete The
Sleeping Beauty was named “a clear first choice among current recordings
of the score.” In addition, he has extensive experience working with dance
companies including English National Ballet, Dutch National Ballet, Nederlands
Dans Theater, Birmingham Royal Ballet, Finnish National Ballet, Norwegian
National Ballet, and both Australian and West Australian Ballet, among others.
From 1992 to 2002, Mogrelia was conductor-in-residence at Birmingham
Conservatoire where he conducted the orchestra in public concerts each season.
He also conducted the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, and the Irish
National Youth Orchestra. Recently, Mogrelia made his debut with the Finnish
National Ballet’s production of The Sleeping Beauty. He has also
conducted performances of The Nutcracker for Den Norske Ballet in Oslo,
an engagement for which he has been invited every year since his debut with
them. Last season he made his American debut with American Ballet Theatre,
including performances at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York. Other
engagements include a further recording for Naxos; Previn’s Honey and Rue
with the Noord Nederlands Orchestra; a program of minimalist music with the
Royal College of Music’s New Perspectives Ensemble; and more Nutracker
performances in Norway. In May 2003, Mogrelia was appointed to the position of
music director and principal conductor for San Francisco Ballet.
