Ute Lemper’s "But One Day”
"But
One Day..." Is a sparkling vocal miracle and a mesmerizing listening
experience for anyone who loves the traditional and avant-garde Cabaret music.
This CD is rich and multi faceted at many levels, because it encompasses all
styles and aspects of old and “nouveau” cabaret genres. Add to it,
compositions by French, German and American composers. It is an international
carousel of cabaret folklore at its best in: variety, diversity, drama and
infinite musical expressions. It contains cabaret classics by France’s great
Jacques Brel, Kurt Weill and Hans Eisler.
Ute
Lemper herself is a
phenomenon. She is worldwide recognized as the real Cabaret Diva who
differentiates and distinguishes herself from other Divas and torch singers by
her highly refined style, class, intellect, renaissance and world culture
background, theatrical stardom which is based upon a mysteriously and
enigmatically “Femina Persona” which for generations was the exclusive
monopoly of the one and only Marlene Dietrich her compatriot. Those
attributes put her at ease in singing typical Parisian cabaret songs and
passionate European ballades and hymns, for she grew up in those ambiences,
atmospheres, milieux and surroundings. She finds her roots in European theater
and cabaret songs, in Jacques Brel’s “Ne Me quitte Pas” (If you Go away) and
in Kurt Weill’s “September Song” and Astor Piazzolla’s “Buenos Aires” and many
other greats like Hans Eisler. “But One
Day” album captures and depicts her best past and recent performances in
addition to a rich selection of songs she wrote herself and famous American
ballads and melodious songs like” Mack the Knife”, “I am a Stranger Here
Myself”. All blended in a perfect harmony and unity between the early 20th
century’s Cabaret and contemporary avant-garde Cabaret repertoire. Rich
orchestration at a symphonic level, along with creative and up-beat modern
arrangements create a whole new universe for what Cabaret used to be or ready
to become. This album is a treasure. Buy it. We gave this album a 5 star
rating.
